Methods To Promote Your Blog For Free

Bloggers are so crazy about visitors. Many bloggers check their blog visitors every day to see how many people are visiting their blog. This is because all bloggers want other people to read what they are trying to say and their personal opinion.

No one creates a blog for the sake of blogging without anyone visiting them. That is what a blog is all about. Blogging is socializing. You don’t have to be a great writer to start a blog. You blog because you want to hear other people’s opinion and also show others what is your opinion on a certain topic.

Bloggers that have extra cash to spend, they sometimes spend big only to bring people to their blog. One of the most popular place to advertise your blog is through Google Adword. If you don’t know what you are doing, you can create a hole in your pocket through the wrong step you take.

Don’t feel down with competitors that have the cash. You can go slowly in driving traffic. The best way to bring traffic to your blog is through free methods and not by spending so much in ads. Don’t get me wrong. If you have the money, you can go the faster way.

In the other hand, I prefer free traffic through free methods. I hate to pay for ads except for driving traffic to a landing page. That is a different story because you are trying to sell something. You will usually get your money back if you can sell something. Here are the free methods that can make a difference to your blog:

Blog commenting

Leave your comments at other blogs that have the same topic or niche as you are. Keep the blog’s address for you to go back in the future. It is a good idea to make friends with people who have the same interest as you.

Blog commenting allows you to leave your blog’s address when you leave your comments. Don’t do this to spam other blogs or they will block your comments. Leave quality comments so that other people who read your comment knows that you are not a spam bot.

Use social media

Social media such as Facebook and Twitter are use widely around the world and the best part of it is you can use it for free. Post something that people love to read about for instance something funny, sad and touching story. When other people likes your post, they will help you share.

Blogging style social media such as Tumblr, Pinterest and Squidoo also plays an important part. You can write something about your blog or about your topic and leave a link there. If someone is interested in your article, they will click your link and you will have free traffic.

Article marketing

For me, this is the hard part but this is the best way to make your blog known to others. English is not my first language. That means I will have grammatical errors everywhere on my article no matter how much I check my article. for this reason I stick with social media.

If you think your English is great and you know how to format your article, you are good to go. The best way to send your article is to Ezine Article. People always look around Ezine to find free articles and probably they will find yours. Ezine is just an example. You can send your article in any article directory website that you prefer.

Word of mouth

This is a traditional way of promoting. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t intend to ask you to promote your blog to anyone you see (that also works). What I meant here is when your blog is popular and worthy to read, people can introduce your blog to their friends.

If you have a business card, you can write down your blog there. Some people start a blog for business purpose and giving business cards away with their blog’s address is a pretty normal thing to do. Don’t be so down in promoting your blog.

Top 4 Most Easy Ways To Make Money Online

For some people who still do not understand, if talking about making money online, all they can think of is blogging. This is because the internet marketers promote blogging more than any other money making ways on the internet. For those who already familiar with internet marketing, they know that blogging is not the fastest way but the safest and longest.

Do you want to know what is the fastest way? Do you even know that there are other fastest way to earn your first dollar online? Below is the top 4 most fastest way to make money online.

4. Become a freelancer

If you have any skills, talent or even have the looks, register your name in the freelance website available on the internet. I have seen the silliest thing that anyone can do on the internet to make money and they get paid for it.
Freelancers at Fiverr have the most silly and weirdest job
description on the internet

The best thing to do before registering is to know what is your skills and specialties. The highest paid freelancers are usually professionals. They can easily get a few hundred dollars for a few hours per day. How cool is that? It is truly the comfort of working from home.

If you have the skills and interested in working from home, you can register at Freelancer, Elance and Fiverr.

An early warning to you that people who hires will prefer freelancers who already have good reputation and high rated. As a new freelancer, you need time to get your first job online.

3. Forex Trading

This is also one of the famous method to make money online. But forex trading is not for everyone. You must know how to trade before you start. There are many forex trading simulation online that you can learn from. Or you can ask someone to teach you to trade.

It is advisable that you don't trade if you are a total newbie. Forex trading involves a lot of money. If you don't have any experience, you can lose a lot of money in a blink of an eye.

I think I don't have the experience to give any advice about forex trading because I don't trade. You can ask around or ask for someone who knows about online trading. However, by doing it right, you can earn a fat paycheck by doing forex trading.

2. Online Betting

A lot of people loves online betting especially involving sports. The biggest online betting are in football or soccer. It is the most popular sport in the world and the influence can make people go loco. Most popular online betting system is from UK because football is popular there.

But it doesn't only target football. You can bet in any kind of sports or event. There are even people who bet on an election campaign.

You don't need to have special skills to bet. Its just following instinct and luck. Be warn that this is gambling. You can lose some and you can earn some. But it is worth to mentioned as the fastest way to make money online.

1. Online Gambling

This is my personal favourite. I love gambling but now I don't have the time to gamble anymore. A few of the gambling sites are also not allowed from my country. The most popular gambling game online is poker and blackjack.

Most people gamble online for fun and to kill their free time. This is like the people tells you 'here's my money, take it'. That is why online gambling is on top of my list about the fastest way to make money online.

My early warning, this is gambling, it involves money like betting and you can lose a lot of money if you get addicted. Gambling also require skills like top poker players in the world.

#Bonus

I want to add one bonus on the most fastest way to make money online that is scamming. You can laugh all you want but this method is also popular, fast and effective.

People are filled with greed that they will do anything to make money. Just build a few websites or send emails to people and see how it work like magic. In my country, Malaysia, you really can get rich quick by scamming people.

But this method is not recommended but it is still worth to mentioned. You can earn a lot of money by scamming but it also the fastest way to land you in jail if you get caught.

Conclusion

As conclusion, you all can assume that the best and fastest way to make money online is to have special skills or talent. Without skills and talent, it's hard, damn hard.

Remembering the SwissCash 'Scam'

Once upon a time there was a scam called SwissCash a.k.a Swiss Mutual Funds. There are a lot more websites like these before it was totally banned by the Malaysian government. I wanted to mentioned a few of them but SC is the biggest so lets stick to it.

SC guarantees the return on investment every month and the according to the following:

1 to 3 months - 10%
4 to 6 months - 15%
7 to 9 months - 20%
10 to 12 months - 25%
13 to 15 months - 30%

All these so-called scams are declared illegal and was banned on 2007. I was one of the investor during the time but luckily I don't lose a large chunk of money like big investors. The first and most popular investing site was of course the SC. Then many other small sites are following its footsteps and slowly gain popularity.

What makes me pissed off was the money that was invested was never returned by the Malaysian Securities Commision. Never mind myself but I really pity others that have invest thousands and thousands of Ringgit (converted to USD) to SC. It is not totally banned, only the website is banned from viewing.

After these few years, SC was still in the back of my mind. I was thinking is it really a scam? However, I never really did a thorough investigation but you can read it in Wikipedia. SC was declared illegal because it is a pyramid scheme and there are no proof that the company even existed.

SC is labelled as a scam and a fraud. During the time it was banned, you cannot even view the website and it never did. It was also claimed that thousands of people lose millions of USD because of this scam. Then, I was thinking, if it is a scam, why in the hell did they pay their investors every month like promised?!

If I am going to start a scam website, I will take everyone's money and poof!! like David Copperfield. I don't have to wait until everybody screams "its a scam!" It is not just SC. All the internet investment websites are paying. They did not take the money and they deliver on time. Where is the scam here?

But that is the past. Now we are in 2013! It is even better! These few months, this dude in my Facebook friend list came out with the same thing but with different approach. With experience that I have, I knew that what he promoted have the same agenda with SC. What's even better is, it is operated in Malaysia and it is licensed.

I won't share the website here for safety reasons. I don't want everybody to get excited again for something that is not certain. It's not the website that I fear, its the government policy. They can turn off the website anytime they want if it is a 'scam'.

I also wanted to see how far this investment would go. I know lots and lots of people here in Malaysia are greedy and lazy. All people want to earn money but they don't want to work. The type that wants to sit at home doing nothing and money comes from the sky. That is why Malaysian are easy prey for scams.

I have tried making email marketing here in Malaysia. I was promoting a few good products for small entrepreneurs. The products is about handling business, money, stocks and a few others. The product was really good and I was honest in helping them. I send the promotion via email to more than a thousand people.

Not a single item was sold! It is not surprising at first because I thought some of the products are a bit expensive. What really surprised me was the same amount of people dare to spend money on a marketing crap that was posted on the same forum. A blind person also can realize that the ads was a scam.

I want to advise to the people who reads this blog to listen to me. If you want to scam, no matter how stupid you are in scamming, try a Malaysian forum or any website full of Malaysian. Trust me, it is an easy target. One more thing, your ad must be something like this:

"Want to earn big money with small investment?! Email me at yousuck@dumbass.com. Just a small amount to earn big"

or

"Invest in real estate with our company to gain huge return! Live like in heaven in 7 days guaranteed!"

You will be surprised by how many people will email or call you to join you so-called investment. Correct me if I sound stupid but if there are such investment, would everyone will be millionaires? A simple logic is needed but no one cares. They are blinded by greed.

Conclusion
I am not trying to defend any scams that are gone or still available and I'm also not a fan of such investments but use some common sense. Why wouldn't the government wait for everyone to cash out their investment before shutting the website down? Give the people some time to cash out their money.

In my personal opinion, I think the government doesn't like the idea of moving too much Ringgit outside the country.  That is why the government rush things out to shut down the entire investment websites.

This should be a lesson to the Malaysian people. Greed makes them lost their money and maybe their everything. Look at the millionaires out there. Do you see them not working? They are also working even if it is a few hours a day.

Blog Terms That You Should Write Down

These are the few things that you should remember and you should write it down on your note as future reference. It is the blog terms that everyone talk about when they are building their website or trying to make money online.

It is important to know these terms because any forum, social networking site or any blogging guru will use these terms. It is the basic to the internet world.

Browser - Software to browse the internet such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.

Organic traffic - Traffic that visits a website through search engine

Direct traffic - Traffic that type your website url directly in the browser

No Tech Skills? NO Problem!

Around the world, at this hour, so many people want to make money online. This is because there is proof of people are living in cloud 9 because of internet business. It is true though. We really can make a living through a dot com lifestyle.

But not everything is good or as easy as it sounds. Most internet entrepreneurs will come to a small obstacle called technical skills. If you have zero experience in tech skills, it will be very hard to start. Don't ever believe if someone try to sell you something and tells you that you don't need any tech skills.

Of course, in some cases, you really don't need it. That is because the person who is teaching you to make money will teach you about tech skills. So you see, you will need the skills to improve and to gain knowledge.

If you are a true beginner or a newbie, there is nothing to worry about. You will learn tech skills whether you pay for it or ask your friends to teach you.

What I want to share with you today is a few website that can help you with tech skills. However, this will come with a warning. Don't depend too much on paid skills. You should learn how to do things by yourself. But, if you are a busy person, below is the website you should look at.

Master-Resell-Rights
This is a website for you to find information that you need in cheaper price. Most tech ebook on Clickbank will sell a lot higher than master-resell-rights.

In short, Master-Resell-Rights is like Clickbank but way more cheaper. They also sell ebooks. I love ebooks. It is the fastest way to find a book that you need. The website also contains a lot of topics and various ebook collections.

The good thing about Master-Resell-Rights is that you have the resell rights with any purchase that you make. Some ebook's resell rights allowed you to modify the content of the ebook and make the ebook looks like yours. That mean you will have all the rights to do what you want with the ebook.

The bad thing about Master-Resell-Rights is you don't have the money-back-guarantee like Clickbank. If you don't like the ebook that you buy, you can't do anything about it. Some of the ebooks are also low quality. This is the risk that you have to take when you buy from Master-Resell-Rights.

Elance.Com / Freelancer.Com
Most of internet entrepreneurs who have the skills use this website to earn money online. For those who don't have the skills, this is the place to hire somebody with the skills you require.

The only thing that you have to look out for is the price. Skilled 'workers' will demand higher fees for their service. But for some people, they don't mind paying for a good service. Read the previous comments and ratings about the person who you want to hire before hiring them.

Fiverr.Com
Fiverr also sells specific skill. The only difference is that Fiverr fixed its price to $5.00 per gigs. They called it gigs and I personally hate that term they used. It's not a rock band duh..

At Fiverr you can find almost any skills you require, from the complicated to the silliest and all for just 5 bucks. If you require any jobs to be done faster or any additional jobs, you will have to pay more. You can view the additional payment when you view a person's profile.

Final Words
Tech skills are important to internet entrepreneurs even though you don't have to learn complicated codes like a website developers.

If you are willing to learn slowly, that is the best way to do it. But sometimes learning is not the issue. Some people need their work to be done asap. In some issue, there is too much work to be done. Next time, if you feel you need some help or learn something, don't forget to check out the websites above.

Blog vs Website

If someone asks you, what is the difference between a blog and a website, would you be able to answer it? If you can answer, that's good but what if you can't? I'm not surprised that there are still some people who don't know the difference.

Yes, both are websites and owned by an individual, a group or an organization. Blogs are usually owned by an individual. The best examples are Blogger blogs. Meanwhile a website is usually owned by an organization. An easy example is ecommerce website such as Ebay.

Blog is an online journal in a website. I think that is the best explanation that i could tell. If you view someone's blog at Blogger, you can tell that a blog contain "stories" like a diary or news, politics and lifestyles.

A website however doesn't contain any "stories" or articles. It usually shows about an organization, what they do, contacts, pictures, activities, reports etc.

Let see the easiest example available that everyone regularly used. The one and only Youtube. Youtube is a website but it has its own blog.

As you can see above, this is the Youtube website. It contain a lot of videos from all around the world and it acts as a place to share or to save videos.

And this is Youtube's blog and it also contains press release to inform about what is going on in the website and any other current news or updates.

Last Words
I hope now everybody will understand what is the difference between a blog and a website. I also want to remove the confusion that everyone have about blogs and websites.

Blogs are getting popular today because almost everyone wants to own a blog whether it's free or paid. These individuals wants their opinion to be known for other especially friends and families. Blogs are also used for them to make money online. If you have a talent to do that, you can expect to have some additional income just by writing articles.

Google Panda Search Algorithm - Add Nofollow Tag To Comments

Comments are important to any blog. Comments are used as interaction between the blog owner or writer and the readers. Readers can write any comment about the post that have been created. This is what we called a healthy interaction within a blog. It shows that the blog is alive and have readers. Even negative comments are considered healthy because there are interactions.

Many blogs today moderate incoming comments because the comments contain spam. How does a comment contain spam? What is obvious about comment spam is they contain hyperlink or a link to another website. Bloggers hate this kind of stuff because it can lower a blog's rating.

A few blogs still allow any comments including spam and whatsoever that people want to write there. It is their choice to do that. As for me, I allow any comment because this is not a self-hosted domain and its free to use. Adding to that, this blog is my personal note that I share with everyone.

For those who not yet adding nofollow tag to the title, below post and side widget, you can read about it here. This is to avoid your blog to become a victim to Google Panda search algorithm.  For the link inside the comment box, follow the instructions below.

Nofollow Author Links:

Organic Traffic - How To Send Your Website To Search Engines

Organic traffic are the traffics that comes from search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. These traffic comes to a website because the search engines shows your website content on the search result. That is why blogs are more SEO friendly than a regular websites. It is because blogs have articles and with keyword density, it's heaven for blogs.

Everytime an internet user key in a keyword on the search bar and hit enter, the search result usually shows what is related to the keyword. Those keywords are within a website. If it is related to your website or blog, it will show your website name and the keywords used.

Don't Forget To Send Your Website
When building your first website, organic traffic will come across to your mind because it is the most easy part of finding free traffic. To do that, keyword research is done to make your website SEO friendly. After that, add a few articles that contains the keywords that you have found.

SEO Friendly Website

Everyone who owns a website or a blog wants their website to be SEO friendly. A website is considered the best if it has a good ranking on Google and their goal is to be rank #1. Almost all website owners thought that no one on the internet will turn to page 2 on Google. That is why a SEO friendly website is the best way to do this.

For those who don't know what SEO, it is an acronym of Search Engine Optimization. It is important for us to gain to the first page of Google but I don't think #1 rank is really that necessary. SEO friendly website means that your website can be easily found by search engines if a person type something related to your website. These things will increase organic traffic to your website.

Website owners usually buy one or a few SEO tools or software to get their desired effect to their website ranking. They buy these tools to save their time to get higher page rank and become SEO friendly. That is why some tools or software are expensive.

As we all know, it takes time (a lot of it) to make our website to be known on the internet. It will take at least a few months to more than a year to do this.

The main question here is, how do you really make your website SEO friendly? How do you do it? To answer this question, I have two things to say. I have bad news and really good news for you.

The bad news
SEO tools and software are expensive. I believe many people don't trust cheap SEO tools. The future of a website depends on these tools to make it well-known. People like you and me does not have that much money to buy these tools.

Plus, these tools are paid monthly to get the best results. We got other bills to pay. Logically thinking, we can't really compete with individuals or organizations that have big bucks to spend for their website. To make a SEO friendly website can be that terrifying.

The good news
You don't have to pay for expensive tools to make your website SEO friendly. In fact, you don't have to pay anything to do that. The trick on how to get your website SEO friendly is at the keyword used in your website.
Image: Source
The key is to write SEO friendly content

Keyword is a very important element in a website. That is why blogs rank better than a plain website. Blogs contain words. Now you know why blogging gurus out there talk so much about keyword density.

Search for good keywords with Google Keyword Tool for high demand keywords. But remember to search keywords that have anything to do with your website and not some other words that are not related. Use these keywords in your articles.

If you keep up with this strategy, you will have a very SEO friendly website and will be ranked on page 1 in a matter of months. Of course this effect will take place if you are a determine blogger and blogs frequently. Having a few articles is not enough to make your website SEO friendly.

Create unique content and frequent update will make it faster for your website to rank. This also can prevent your website to become a victim to Google Panda.

Conclusion
With the right technique, we can save a lot of money to make our website SEO friendly. Do some homework before you want to post an article. Look for good keywords that you can use in your article and keep the keyword density.

This doesn't mean that I am preventing you from buying any SEO tools and it doesn't mean that the SEO tools are fakes. You can buy it if you want to and if you have the money. It is according to any individual needs.

If you don't want to waste any money on some kind of tools to make your website SEO friendly, use the techniques above. The key is to find the best keywords to use.

What is Keyword Density

Many new bloggers doesn't know or don't even care about keyword density in their article. This is because they don't understand the importance of keyword density. Without keyword density, it is very hard to keep up with search engines especially Google. Google change their algorithm almost at anytime they want. Their business is providing information so you can't blame them for that. Keyword density makes the article SEO friendly and easy to be crawled by the search engine.

Keyword density is the repetition of the title of the article. What is the title of the article? What are the words used? The keyword density will be based upon this. For example, if the article title is 'How to Cook Butter Prawn' then the article body must contain sentence that contain 'cook' and 'butter prawn. It is as simple as that.

Image: Source
It is not that hard to create an article which is keyword-rich and with the appropriate density as long as it is still according to the title. However, do not put sentence that are not in line with the title. This will make the article look bad and can ruin the whole article, the writer and the website itself.

If you are not tight on budget, there are a lot of keyword density tools which can be downloaded online. However, it is best to do the keyword analysis yourself because it is not that difficult. There are also free keyword density tools such as Keyword Density Analyzer Tool, SEO Centro's Keyword Density Tool, SEO Chat's Keyword Density Tool and KeywordDensity.com.

All the tools work the same way. They analyze and count how many keywords in a certain website that are typed in their search tool. User of these tools can also analyze keyword in a certain webpage of their website which contain one article for review.

How To Find The Right Keyword For Your Blog
This is a question that every newbie want to ask. It is a good question actually because without the right keyword, it is hard to gain traffic to your website or blog. Do not blog just for fun. This sounds bad but it is the truth. If you start a blog for fun and nobody are coming to your blog, you will eventually stop blogging.

People create blogs to share their passion. Passion is not for fun. It is a life for some people.

There are few bloggers that blog for a certain group of people like co-workers, colleagues, classmates or club members. Usually, these kind of bloggers are paid or have their own personal gain. These bloggers don't care about traffic. The only thing they need to do is to update their blog regularly.

For bloggers who need to make some profit, they need traffic. To get more traffic, find keyword that suits your niche and start blogging. People will eventually come to your blog when they search the search engine even if it takes time.

The simplest way to find the right keyword is to use a free tool called Google Keyword Tool. It is a tool inside the Google Adword. Google Adword is used to promote websites or products so keyword is important if you are trying to promote something.

Conclusion
To attract more traffic using search engines, keyword density is important in writing an article for blogs. These kind of traffic is called organic traffic and usually they are first timers in a certain website because they find the website through a search engine. Remember to search for keyword ideas before posting an article.

Domain Name Issue With HostGator - Expensive Dude!

I forgot to mention this in the earlier post (read here) about HostGator. If you visited or already registered with HostGator, you will notice the domain name is quite expensive. Nobody wants to pay more for the same item, I get that. So, I recommend that you buy your domain name from a different web hosting company that is Namecheap.com.

Here is how you do it if this is the first time you register for your very first website:

1. Go to Hostgator to register your web. HostGator is a web hosting company. You can click on the link or the banner below to do this.

2. Click on the orange button "VIEW WEB HOSTING PLAN" and it will take you to three plans to choose that is "Hatchling Plan", "Baby Plan" and "Business Plan".

3. Choose which plan do you want to use. I recommend you to use "Baby Plan" because it gives you unlimited domains. But this is yours to choose. "Baby Plan" starts from $6.36 per month and it can change according to the discount given. Click "Order Now" button.

4. Under the "Please enter a domain", choose "I already owned this domain" so that you will not purchase your domain name with HostGator because it is expensive there.

Under the "Please confirm your hosting package information", choose your billing cycle. If you choose below 36 months, it will cost you $7.96 per month. If you choose 36 months, it will cost lower, that is $6.36 per month. Fill the form and you are good to go. You can see your total bill when you scroll down.

5. After you are finished with HostGator, Go to Namecheap.com to register your domain name. You can click the link or the banner below.

Namecheap.com - Cheap domain name registration, renewal and transfers - Free SSL Certificates - Web Hosting

6. Enter you domain name in the search box to see if it is available. This is quite easy to do compared to registering a web host. You only have to choose the extensions. .com is a familiar post to choose. You can choose others if you want to. Fill the form and you are good to go. It costs about $10.69 a year.

Why Traffic is Important To A Website

In the process of learning to build an online business or some people called it internet entrepreneurship, we will come across with what most bloggers are talking about, TRAFFIC. Traffic craze will make any blogger to do anything to promote their blog or website. However, there are some small percentage of bloggers don't mind about how much traffic came in. They just love to blog as much as they wanted to.

What is Traffic? Why is it important? These are some of the questions that many new bloggers have in mind. New bloggers have different things in mind. They concentrate on how to build the website first without minding on other things such as the content, traffic, design and so on.

It is a normal thing if bloggers don't think about traffic at first but don't make it a habit in the next blog project. That is why blogging gurus tell people to make a plan before started blogging. Make a plan starting from scrap until when the website is done and running. Then, concentrate on how to maintain the website.

Traffic are the people who come or visitors to a website. It has the same concept as the physical store. Imagine that your website or blog just like a supermarket. If nobody comes to your store, that means no buyer. The only difference is, a website or a blog receive people from the internet, virtually. That is why traffic is important. Remember that no traffic, no buyer.

Not all traffic are good or have the QUALITY (blogging language). Traffic comes from many parts in the internet such as the search engine, social website, forum, email and so on. It depends on how people promote their website. Now you have the idea why some websites have huge traffic but have small income.

What a website really need is quality traffic. Now comes the question, what is quality traffic? A simple answer is hungry buyers. These kind of people need the things that you sell. They not only come to do window shopping. Well, window shopping is not a bad thing because who knows that these people will turn to customers.

In some websites, they teach people to filter their traffic. That means, they are trying to avoid bad traffic to their website. In this case, they already have a huge amount of traffic everyday and they need to remove some of them. Why are they doing this? Because bad traffic also can mean that they are spammers, bots, thieves and many others that can ruin a website, especially their business.

If you have a business online and have a small amount of traffic each day, consider to build a blog. Blog are very good for SEO (search engine optimization) because it contain articles. People use words to search on the search engine and articles contains words, so many of them. You can get free traffic to your website using a blog.

In other ways, if you have the budget, you can buy traffic to your website. One popular way to do this is through PPC (pay per click) advertisements like Google Adword. But there are other ways you can do to buy traffic. You can choose any other ways to suit your taste.

Conclusion
No matter what kind of business people do on the internet, traffic is very important. No matter how, free or paid, get more traffic to your website. Traffic will increase sales on your page. If the traffic is not interested, they can tell their friends to visit your website. Word of mouth is a very powerful tool because people trust their friend more than your website.

Internet Resources - How Legitimate Is Your Resources

Internet is a large information storage device. It is so large that anyone on this planet can access it anywhere and anytime. You can find any types of information from any kind of topics available from managing a business to what happens in your bed. If that information is not enough, you also can interact with other people from around the globe using social network to get the information that you need. It sounds impossible at first but that is currently happening in our daily lives whether you realize it or not.

Even school children search the web for assignments. Internet makes it convenient to many of us. Complicated subjects are made easy with cut and paste service. You don’t have to re-type books or re-draw building plans when it is ready made. With so much easy-to-get information, people are going lazy but this is what technology is made for.

However, though it sound too good to be true, the information that we are retrieving sometimes are not accurate, tampered, unreliable or just a fake.  Internet can be accessed by anyone as long as there is an internet connection. This creates opportunities for people to commit fraud, identity theft, scam or any other criminal activities. The free information that we always get are also unreliable or it is coming from untrusted source.

Searching on the internet
For most internet users, beginners or even lazy people who don’t like to search a reliable database, they use search engines, which is very easy to use. For those people who doesn’t know what search engines, these are examples: google.com, yahoo.com and bing.com. Search engines are your best friend on the internet. You can just type in anything that you want to find on the search engines.

To use a search engine, you open your web browser (internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome) and type the search engine’s URL for example www.google.com. After the page loads the search engine’s website, type the information you required at the search bar and click search. After a second, all the information on your search term will load. The page that contains documents shown to you is called search results.

In the existence of the search engines, many of us intend to ‘misuse’ its purpose. Some of us already know what is the web address of the webpage that you are looking for. Instead of typing the web address on the address bar, you type it in the search engine. So, how many of you type Facebook on Google instead of typing www.facebook.com on the address bar?

Search engine results
After you type in your search term, search results will appear. Usually you will click on the first result because it may be the best result available…or is it? How do you determine whether the information that you are looking for is reliable? The first step is seeing the domain name. All domain names will end with .com, .net, .org, .info, .edu and .gov.
        1.       .com
-          Commercial sites.
-          Seen almost every day online.
-          Can be used by individual.
-          E.g www.amazon.com, www.facebook.com
         2.       .net
-          Network infrastructures websites
-          Usually used by organizations that involves networking technologies
-          E.g www.tm.net, http://www.juniper.net
         3.       .org
-          Organization sites
-          Mostly are not profit based websites
         4.       .info
-          Intended to be informative sites
-          Unrestrictive domain, also can be obtained by any individual
-          E.g http://allmalaysia.info/,
         5.       .edu
-          Educational sites
-          Usually used by higher learning education center
-          Cannot be used by individuals
-          Reliable sites for useful resources especially in research
-          E.g www.uitm.edu.my, www.unitar.edu.my
          6.       .gov
-          Government sites
-          Cannot be used by individual
-          Government owned websites
-          Reliable sites especially if you want to find statistics e.g crime index, population etc.
          7.       Other extensions E.g .my, .jp, .us.
-          Country extensions
-          For example .my for Malaysia, .jp for Japan and .us for United States

By looking at the domain name of the website that appears in your search result is the basic thing you should know when you are looking for reliable information. Now you should understand what is the purpose of the website and what kind of website are you looking at. After knowing about the website, you also should consider a few things about the content in the website.
      1.       Author of the website/article
Find out who is the author of the website and his/her qualifications to write the article. What is the author’s experience? Is it related to the article that he/she wrote? Ask yourself these questions when evaluating the information. These questions can help you determine the credibility of the information. Some website has many authors or they are allowing guest author to write articles in their website’s content.
      2.       Currency
See the date of the information given. Is it up-to-date or not. Most of information seekers want to get the latest information available. However, if you are looking for information according to history, the currency is not so important but the date is.
      3.       Objective or purpose of the website
What is the purpose of the website? Is it educational, informative or just a fake? Don’t misunderstand fake information. Some organization purposely place fake information on their website or on Youtube. This fake information has its purpose, whether to increase traffic or to stimulate visitors to comment. But always remember that fake information can lead to scams when you are visiting commercial sites.
      4.       Links provided
Do you see any links provided in the information? What is the purpose of the links? Does the links help the readers and the article itself?

Reliable resources
Professionals used internet in a different way. They look at the most reliable sources on information databases available. Unfortunately, the best resources are not free. You have to pay for membership to retrieve their information. You cannot always expect everything is free on the internet even if it is only information. Some examples of good internet resources are Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, Emerald Insight and other digital libraries such as UiTM Digital Library Collections, World Digital Library and The Smithsonian Libraries available online. These database services provide reliable sources you can get on the internet.

The good news is free resources are available at the digital library mentioned earlier. Only the database services are paid. May be it is because the databases are worth the money that you are paying. However, university digital libraries sometimes don’t allowed outsiders to log in to their library.

Conclusion
Be very careful with internet resources that you find on the internet and extra careful if the website sells anything. Fraud comes in many faces and it hurts the commercial industry in the internet. Use the techniques mentioned above to evaluate the information that you read online. Search for a few more information about the same title so you can conclude what you are reading and for your reference collection. If the information still doesn't satisfy you, ask nearby librarian for help.
